Unemployment

During my “unemployment” I have done the following:

pushed more wind, started practicing yoga more regularly, cooked more, babysat again, tried getting a restaurant job, tried getting a part-time job, tried getting a full-time job, didn’t succeed with any of this; tried not getting a “job” altogether- this worked better. Got involved with permaculture, decided to really care about considering moving out of the city, grew vegetables on my roof terrace, bought a klean kanteen, joined my local community organization in North Brooklyn and started to plan an oral history project with them (Neighbors Allied for Good Growth), sewed my first dress, got excited about WWOOFing, learned how to sheet mulch and got the largest splinter under my nail that I have ever had, started this blog and have felt free from the cage I once consented to.

Renewable Energy, is it any good?

Frequently I am asked a lot of questions when it comes to wind power:

How many birds die from the turbines each year?

How can my apartment get wind power if I don’t have my own turbine?

Wind power has its costs too, the production of turbines is material and energy intensive, so how much better can it be?

My first response is typically, don’t worry, energy and wind power is extremely conceptual and technical. I never learned about it in school, just like how I never learned where I get so many of our other necessary luxuries; food, shelter, communication, transportation, etc. But on another note, lets consider the questions that are not being asked.

How many birds die from pollution related to fossil fuel use every year?

How can I get electricity at my apartment if I do not have a coal plant in my backyard?

Coal plants, nuclear plants and natural gas suppliers use excess energy and resources to build, run and maintain, so how much better can they be?

Wind Power needs a voice and I am happy to be one of these voices here in NYC. Click on the first set of questions for links to some answers and read more at NewWindEnergy.com. Educate yourself on energy… we should all understand this pressing need and issue in our present lives.

I have organized this event for the wind power company I work freelance for, Community Energy Inc. I am super excited to buy a beer for anyone that makes the switch to wind power.
